Lord of all…

Lord of all irony,
Lord of PR,
whose voice is complacent,
whose presence does harm,
is there at our waking,
to show us the way,
your scorn in our hearts, Lord,
at the break of the day.

Lord of all callousness,
Lord of misrule,
your hands swift to gather
your alms for your tools,
be there at our lowing,
and take all away,
you’re bleeding our hearts, Lord,
at the noon of the day.

Lord of all meagreness,
Lord of all serfs,
whose dab hand and skill
were instilled since your birth,
be there at our labours,
and treat us like prey,
your need shows your heart, Lord,
by the eve of the day.

Lord of all hubris and
Lord of all ploy,
whose feckless vainglory
does seek and destroy,
is there in our nightmares
and needs to give way,
your greed really smarts, Lord,
at the end of the day.

[With thanks (and apologies) to Jan Struther (1901 – 1953)]
