Democracy don’t need..

So, I’ve been looking up ‘Types of Democracy’…

Democracy don’t need
no dressing up,
no dandy prefix
bearing false description,
masquerading

no neologising,
obfuscating tricks
nor cheap accessorising.

Don’t pretend
that qualifying adjectives
enhance the basic principle

Democracy recedes
with each apologetic easing
and semantic plot.

Don’t swap it for another and
imagine the exchange is not
demeaning when it cannot
mean the same

Go get
your own damned name
to justify the reasons why
Democracy is dying and the
power of the common people
rots in academic lore

If there is any word that has
a right to sit before,
then it is more.

    • I couldn’t agree more on the inmportance of voting, Jayne! (The poem is actually intended to be my comment on the ‘what’ of democracy – for example: ‘liberal democracy’ which is really neoliberalism or ‘theocratic democracy’ which is really a tooled-up Patriarchy) 🙂

  1. Very clever – as Jayne says ‘This is THE reason to VOTE – Don’t let Politicians steal this Right from us’. The Tories would much prefer us not to vote… Democracy is so inconvenient.

    • I couldn’t agree more about the importance of voting, Sue! (Poem is actually intended to be my comment on the ‘what’ of democracy – for example: ‘liberal democracy’ which is really neoliberalism or ‘theocratic democracy’ which is really a tooled-up Patriarchy, or ‘radical democracy’ which is friction as a default to serve a minority – they do not equal ‘Democracy’) 🙂

  2. I suppose your piece implicitly highlights the contrast with what Democracy ought to be .. and spurred me to attack the closest proponents of ‘liberal democracy’ aka anti-democracy.

    • Yes, indeed, those proponents are most deserving of our contempt. I had my linguist hat on, thinking about how Democracy gets reframed by the value that additional words create and how that distorts and dilutes understanding and facilitates the great hoodwinking…
